Around London in 80 days
In these uncertain times, I need a lifeline and a horizon so I have — somewhat arbitrarily I’ll admit — set a date. April 1st will be my horizon ; my lifeline will be the 80 days separating me from it.
And as I cannot go around the world right now, I give you A Mad Belgian’s “Around London in 80 Days” : eighty impressions of London, eighty stories, places, thoughts from my experience of this wonderfully mad and maddening city.
Day 70: Spicy Basil
In Kilburn in North-West London there’s a Thai restaurant with a history.
It’s the heart of this part of town, an institution. Any day of the week, whatever the time, you will have to join a long queue.
It’s not a very big place you see, and the secret got out: great food at a decent price, London’s best take-out.
I took my parents there once, on their first night in town that year. We sat at one of the average-looking table, drank carrot juice and ate a lovely Pad Thai. We talked forever as we always do, invented new projects, chatted away the night, had a fantastic time.
That memory warms me still, everytime I’m walking past “Spicy Basil”.
What a lovely way, and place, to remember the good time you had together!
