Around London in 80 days
In these uncertain times, I need a lifeline and a horizon so I have — somewhat arbitrarily I’ll admit — set a date. April 1st will be my horizon ; my lifeline will be the 80 days separating me from it.
And as I cannot go around the world right now, I give you A Mad Belgian’s “Around London in 80 Days” : eighty impressions of London, eighty stories, places, thoughts from my experience of this wonderfully mad and maddening city.
Day 79: Quiz Night
Pubs are true hubs of social life in London. A lot of them double as mini venues in which one can come to enjoy a stand up comedy show or a concert.
But of all the pub-related entertainments I’ve discovered on this side of the Channel, “Quiz Night” has made the biggest impression on me.
I don’t think I had ever really attended a quiz before moving to this country. Over here, though, they are everywhere: there are quiz nights in pubs, at work socials, birthday parties, activists gatherings,… and people are quite good at them, too!
Some even make it a proper sport: they have a permanent team with which they “train” every week at the local pub’s “Quiz Night”, around a few pints.
Being new at the game, I don’t usually get many of the answers (unless they are music or Monty Python related, of course). Luckily, it doesn’t matter much: most teams I played with don’t mind. The fun is mainly in the playing… although of course we always try to win.
