Around London in 80 days
In these uncertain times, I need a lifeline and a horizon so I have — somewhat arbitrarily I’ll admit — set a date. April 1st will be my horizon ; my lifeline will be the 80 days separating me from it.
And as I cannot go around the world right now, I give you A Mad Belgian’s “Around London in 80 Days” : eighty impressions of London, eighty stories, places, thoughts from my experience of this wonderfully mad and maddening city.
Day 41: Leicester Square
Charlie Chaplin is no longer lonely.
He’s been joined by a crowd and there are now many stars
Having fun on the Square through the day, through the night.
Paddington, Bugs Bunny, Mr Beans and Batman, Laurel & Hardy and Mary and Harry.
Quiet witnesses to London’s hurry
In a corner you might catch a glance
Of a smiling man dancing around a street lamp.
In his hand, an umbrella —folded.
When life is overwhelmingly good, I do the same
I often dance and sing in the rain
